At the end of a long night of pig judging at the 2015 Chelsea Community Fair Jack McCalla, 9, of Dexter and his pig, “No. 2,” were crowned the individual grand champion while Mason Trinkle took home the reserve individual grand champion rosette.
In the pairs competition, brother and sister, Conner, 10, and EllaHaven Zahn, 7, went head-to-head with their four pigs. And it was younger sister EllaHaven’s Nugget and Cat that took home the purple grand champion banner, while older brother Conner’s pigs Oh and Griffen were the reserve champions.
Both were beaming with smiles and hugs for each other.
And, although EllaHaven had the grand champion goat last year, this was her first years showing pigs at fair.
“I was excited,” she said.
For McCalla, this was his second time winning the individual champion honors in three years. This time, it with his pig #2. Jack doesn’t believe in giving them names; they just go by numbers.
He’s had very successful years at fair winning grand champion pair in 2012, and the individual grand champion pig in 2013.
This was his fourth year showing swine at fair and Jack says he had “a great time” and wasn’t nervous at all. But, he did admit that he liked a previous grand champion individual pig better than the one that took the top honors Tuesday night.
