Chelsea boys swim and dive 10-3 on season

The Chelsea Bulldog Swim and Dive team moved its record to 10-3 with decisive wins over the Pirates of Pinckney and the Rail Splitters of Lincoln last week. Chelsea opened the week traveling to Pinckney on Tuesday, and came away with a 125-55 win and set three pool records in the process.

The first record came in 200yd Medley Relay. Right from the horn Kurt Jolly, Zach Lee, Lee Argir and Joey Mangner blazed to a 1:42.25 capturing 1st place and the record. In the 200yd freestyle Wes Wickens, Collin Babycz and Conner Gilbreath went 2-3-4 to outscore the Pirates. Wickens swam a career best of 1:51.37 as did Babycz clocking a 1:53.12.

Dylan Ousley swam a solid 200yd IM to take first place for the Bulldogs at 2:12.93. Preston Ewald came in 2nd with a time of 2:15.44.

The 2nd pool record of the evening fell at the hands of Joey Mangner as he sprinted to victory in the 50yd freestyle with a time of 21.89. Zach Lee and Kurt Jolly took 3rd & 4th places respectively in the event.

Jordan Smith got in on the fun as he set the new 1-meter diving pool record capturing first place with a score of 299.40 points. Tim Lyons was 2nd with a solid 204.60 point score.

Lee Argir and Kurt Jolly went 1-2 in the 100yd butterfly swimming times of 55.69 and 57.43 respectively. Argir’s time was a season best and Jolly’s first state cut in the event. Michael Geer also scored in the event taking 4th place honors with a time of 1:08.04.

Carter Engler cruised to 2nd place in the 100yd freestyle with a time of 51.61. Joey Mangner qualified for state in his fifth event individually coming in 2nd place in the 500yd freestyle with a time of 5:13.27. Wes Wickens took 3rd and Sumner Oesterle took 4th place honors.

Chelsea won the next four events to close out the meet.

Senior Night was Thursday and as always, the seniors were the focus of the evening with many great performances being turned in by this year’s squad. Chelsea’s 200yd medley relay once again got things off to a winning note as Babycz, Nick Bremmer, Mangner and Argir clocking a 1:44.67.

Kurt Jolly led the way for the Bulldogs in the 200yd freestyle. Jolly swam a career best 1:54.94 with senior Carter Engler close behind in 2nd place at 1:55.60.

The Bulldogs swept the 200yd IM as Mangner, Wickens and Babycz went 1,2,3 respectively. Mangner swam a career best in the event at 2:09.17.

Senior Mitch Taylor was up to the task in the 50yd freestyle as he captured the win for the Bulldogs with a 24.41. Jordan Smith won the 1-meter diving competition with a season best score of 303.20 points. Teammate Tim Lyons was second with a solid score of 206.95 points.

Preston Ewald destroyed the field in the 100yd butterfly winning the event going away at 58.46. Seniors Sumner Oesterle and Michael Geer also scored in the event for the Bulldogs taking 3rd and 4th places respectively.

Lee Argir had another great swim for the week as he captured 1st place in the 100yd freestyle with a season best time of 52.16. Senior Dylan Ousley also scored for the bulldogs taking 2nd place with his best of the season performance of 52.32.

The 500yd freestyle group all had season best times as Logan Mahalak led the way for the Bulldogs with a 5:34.65 and 2nd place. Liam Hartsuff and Tom Oates both had great swims of 5:53.45 and 5:58.22, which were good enough for 3rd and 4th place respectively.

Joey Mangner, Zach Lee, Collin Babycz and Kurt Jolly swam to a season best clocking in the 200yd freestyle relay taking 1st place at 1:30.65.

Chelsea swept the 100yd backstroke with Wickens winning and Ousley and Taylor taking 2nd and 3rd places respectively. The breastroke group would not be out done and as they swept the 100yd breastroke. It was an all senior sweep with Carter Engler capturing 1st place with a time of 1:10.39. Dylan Ousley was 2nd place and Sumner Oesterle was 3rd.

Chelsea finished up the evening taking 1st place honors in the 400yd freestyle relay. Jolly led off with Michael Geer, Preston Ewald and Conner Gilbreath rounding out the quartet. Their time was 3:45.95.

Chelsea next travels to Ann Arbor Pioneer today and then travels to Tecumseh on Thursday to finish out their dual meet season.
