Chelsea businesses, schools, nonprofits and individuals are helping Haiti.
Family Martial Arts, for example, is conducting a toothbrush drive in conjunction with Matthew: 25 Ministries (that’s their bin at left, from their location at 17308 N. M-52). The drive ends Saturday.
“Many people have heard of the disaster and would like to help but, because of the economy, can’t really make a financial donation,” Master Ana Hotaling, Family Martial Arts’ co-owner and master instructor, said in a statement. “But almost everyone has a spare toothbrush or two that they can donate and thus help with the relief efforts in Haiti.”
The business is far from alone in its quest to help.
Girl Scout troops in the area have been compiling “health kits” of a specific list of items ranging from Band-Aids to washcloths, which are being collected tomorrow for shipment to Haiti.
Toni Lucas, Janelle Hirst and Stacey Anttila are holding a Tupperware/Mary Kay fundraiser at 6:30 p.m. tonight at the Inverness Country Club, 13893 N. Territorial. All of the proceeds go to the American Red Cross. If you miss the fundraiser and would like contact information for the organizers, send email.
The Chelsea Rotary is collecting donations for “ShelterBoxes,” which include a “big green box” containing tents, cooking equipment, sleeping bags, blankets and tools intended to support a family of ten. Each box costs $1,000; the Chelsea chapter has already paid for one, and will send as many more as they can support with donations.
To donate, contact Paul Schissler or send a donation to Chelsea Rotary Club, P.O. Box 426, Chelsea, MI 48118. All checks should be made out to ShelterBox, and all proceeds benefit that specific program.
