Kathryn Carras has been weaving for decades, and specializes in knitted dolls like the ones shown here. She’s a member of the Spinners’ Flock, a local handspinning group based in Chelsea, which has about 120 members.
About Kathryn’s art:
All the dolls are mainly handspun wool. I use some commercial yarns,
as noted, for trim. I buy the wings for the fairies and angels. I
knit the dolls using my own original pattern. The wool hair is
needlefelted on. The hair of the dragonfly fairy and the mermaid is
just as it came off the sheep, washed and dyed only.I learned to spin about 30 years ago. I could already knit but did
not do anything other than someone else’s patterns until I started
making dolls. I then discovered that I could just pick up yarn and
needles and knit whatever shape I wanted to. It was very freeing!! I
also like to weave and do felting, and am learning rug hooking. I
finished my MA at Eastern in 2000 doing weaving, felting and drawing.
One thing I learned in art classes there, is to use materials you love
and to spend time playing with them! When I’m not working or doing fiber stuff I like to spend time with my
border collie, either competing in agility trials or walking in the
woods.I can be contacted at weaverlady@sbcglobal.net. I will be selling
my dolls at the Spinners Flock Holiday Fair at the Matthei Botanical
Gardens the Saturday after Thanksgiving and, hopefully, at the Ann
Arbor Rudolph Steiner School Christmas Bazaar, usually the first
Saturday in December.
