Another annual spring clean up day in the books

By Lisa Carolin

Washtenaw County residents arrived in cars, trucks, and vans at Chelsea High School Saturday, May 19 to offload items that required safe disposal.

It was the annual Washtenaw County Clean Up Day, a cooperative effort of the Western Washtenaw Recycling Authority (WWRA), the Washtenaw County Water Resources Commissioner’s Office Board of Public Works, and the Chelsea Athletic Boosters.

Visitors were guided to the appropriate waste stations-hazardous material, scrap metal, appliances, tires, glass and rigid plastic, and e-waste (electronic products). There was a continuous line of vehicles at all of the drop off stations throughout the 9 a.m.-2 p.m. drop-off period.

There were close to 40 Chelsea Athletic Boosters helping out.

“We’ve received a lot of batteries, TVs, computers, appliances, paints, and tires today,” said Darlene Regis, who is on the board of directors of the Chelsea Athletic Boosters. “We’re taking donations from people who live all over Washtenaw County.”

The scrap metal drive is one of the Chelsea Athletic Boosters main fundraisers.

Washtenaw County Clean Up Day is in its tenth year, and the purpose is to insure proper disposal of hazardous household materials. In an average year, close to 40,000 pounds of hazardous household waste is collected and more than 30,000 pounds of electronics.

For more information about recycling and proper disposal, contact the WWRA at www.wwrarecycles.org.
