Ask The School Psychologist: how to track your child’s screen time

(Chelsea Update would like to thank Kristin Krarup-Joyce for the information in this story.)

I recently found a new tool to help monitor your child’s screen time.

It is from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). Visit www.HealthyChildren.org/MediaUsePlan to use the media-time calculator to estimate how long your child spends daily on various activities: homework, meals, chores, sleep, etc.

The time left over equals what he is likely spending in front of a screen. You can then use the tool to create a personalized media plan for your family.

You can find suggestions from the AAP for screen-free zones, curfews, media etiquette, and more.

I like the fact that the tool breaks down how much sleep your child needs based on his age. You may be surprised at how much time in front of a screen your child is actually spending.
