Aug. 13: Chelsea Kiwanis to hear from Stacy Lorne

(Chelsea Update would like to thank Bob Milbrodt for the information in this story.)

This Monday, the Chelsea Kiwanis Club will hear from Stacy Lorne from the Girl Scouts Heart of Michigan.

She represents over 19,000 girls and 6,000 adult volunteers in 34 Michigan counties, including 20 troops in the Chelsea area.

Chelsea scouts were recently featured in a Chelsea Update article about their troop’s work showcased at the state museum.

Last week, Nancy Memmer, incoming First Lady of the Michigan District of Kiwanis, introduced Winnie Brys and Cindy Etsler.

Etsler started the Preemie Pals program at Mott Hospital. The volunteers make quilts for babies at U of M Brandon Neo-Natal Intensive Care unit.

The quilts cover the isolets and have proven to be therapeutic, controlling humidity, light, temperature, and sound. The quilt goes home with the baby.

The hospital is a Level IV care center, which has staff to care for the most acute cases and about 1,200 premature babies come from all over Michigan and surrounding states.

Last year, more than 600 quilts were donated and the goal is to give one to each child.

Winnie Brys is chair of Michigan District of Kiwanis Young Children Priority One Committee, and with incoming First Lady Nancy Memmer will work to support this program with quilting supplies and hands throughout Michigan.

Madison Brodeur recapped her grueling and rigorous week of training at the Kiwanis State Police Career Academy with other high school students interested in the state police as a profession. In addition to studying the many facets of police work, team building and leadership skills.

Madison, who led off her talk with a description of the 5:15 a.m. start of the day followed by an hour of intense exercise. She repeated the wisdom:”If you think you can, you will; if you think you can’t, you’re right.”

The club meeting begins each Monday at 6:15 p.m. in the St. Joseph Mercy Chelsea Hospital cafeteria, and the speakers begin at about 6:45 p.m. Everyone is invited to the club’s meetings to learn about Kiwanis.
