Let the playoffs begin.

Chelsea finished its regular season on Senior Night last Friday with physical 21-6 win over visiting Haslett. The Vikings came into the game needing a victory to qualify for the playoffs while the home team punched their ticket for the post season last week.

The first quarter saw both teams struggle to move the ball. Chelsea’s defense kept Haslett, a team that put up 48 points against a ranked team the week before, in check forcing several punts. The first quarter ended 0-0.

In the second quarter, the Bulldogs broke the scoreless tie when Jack Bush hit Bailey Edwards in full stride for a 69-yard scoring strike. Noah van Reesema added the point after for a 7-0 lead. After forcing another three and out, Chelsea was on the move again. The quick drive ended with Justice Staton hitting Edwards for 29-yard TD and the point after put the Bulldogs up 14-0.

On the next series, junior Jacob Rhodes stepped in front of Viking’s pass and gave the Bulldogs great field position before the end of the half. The drive stalled and the teams went in to the locker rooms with Chelsea ahead 14-0.

Haslett opened the second half on offense and finally got on the score board on 41-yard pass play. The point after attempt failed leaving the score at 14-6. The teams traded punts and the Bulldogs stopped another drive when senior Cam Starkey picked off a pass.

Chelsea finally got back in the scoring column on a 10-play, 50-yard drive that ended with Staton sneaking in from a yard out. Van Reesema’s point after put Chelsea on top 21-6. The Bulldog defense controlled the game the rest of the way. Senior Grant Ortbring caused a fumble that was quickly recovered by junior Quinn Kelly to stop one drive and senior Tim Johnson recovered a fumble to stop another. Haslett’s final drive was halted when senior Dom Goderis fell on a loose ball for another recovery.

Chelsea then ran out the clock for the victory.

Leading tacklers for Chelsea were Mason Bailey, Grant Ortbring, Bryan Evans, Quinn Kelly and Jacob Rhodes.

Leading rushers were Ty Nelson, Trey Seitz, Kenny McDowell and Jacob Grob.

The Bulldogs turned last year’s 2-7 record around this year to finish 7-2. Both losses were by a mere touchdown.

Celebrating their last regular season home game were the following seniors:
Cam Starkey, Tyler Lukomski, Kenny McDowell, Jacob Dobberstein, Grant Ortbring, Daniel Klink, Jeremy Policht, Ty Nelson, Alonzo Taylor, Dom Goderis, Mason Bailey, Tim Johnson, Ryan Eisley, Tony Nicol, Paul Heck, Michael Smith, Jacob Gaken, Karl Collins, Kolten Savery, David Dolan, Bryan Evans, and Daniel Lindauer.
