Cancer Support Community of Greater Ann Arbor expanding services

(Chelsea Update would like to thank Laura Blodgett for the information in this story.)

The Cancer Support Community of Greater Ann Arbor (CSC) recently announced the expansion of its support services through a new collaboration with St. Joseph Mercy Chelsea (SJMC) Cancer Center and St. Joseph Mercy Brighton Cancer Center (SJMB).

SJMC and SJMB Cancer Centers provide medical treatment for adults diagnosed with cancer, and are committed to providing the best cancer care to patients and families.

CSC provides free psychosocial support programs to all people impacted by cancer. These programs include professionally-led support groups, nutrition and cooking classes, educational programming, stress management and exercise activities, and social support opportunities.

All programs and services are grounded in research and have been shown to have a positive impact on patients’ quality of life. Benefits range from the management of physical side effects such as fatigue to emotional side effects including depression and anxiety.

The cancer center at St. Joseph Mercy Chelsea provides patients with leading-edge cancer treatments on a 115-acre wooded campus in an intimate and private setting. The cancer center, opened in December 2014, enables local residents to receive a wide range of cancer treatments, from surgery to chemotherapy and radiation, all under one roof and close to home.

As part of Saint Joseph Mercy Health System, SJMC is one of Michigan’s most advanced cancer providers. Patients have access to the latest technology including Cyberknife®, DaVinci® robotics procedures and National Cancer Institute-sponsored research trials.

In this new affiliation, CSC will be an integral part of the psychosocial support programming offered to the patients and families treated at SJMC and SJMB Cancer Centers from the moment of diagnosis.

The newly-formed agreement will enable CSC, through the support of SJMC and SJMB, to provide services to people in western Washtenaw and Livingston counties who are impacted by cancer, and further the mission of ensuring that all people impacted by cancer are empowered by knowledge, strengthened by action, and sustained by community.

CSC will provide free services at the SJMC and SJMB Cancer Centers including quarterly educational workshops, weekly yoga classes, and monthly support groups for people impacted by cancer. With this expansion, CSC services are now available at the CSC of Greater Ann Arbor, St. Joseph Mercy Canton Cancer Center, St. Joseph Mercy Chelsea Cancer Center, and St. Joseph Mercy Brighton Cancer Center.
