The Chelsea Area Garden Club (CAGC) will award a limited number of grants of up to $1,000 in 2018 to local nonprofit organizations for sustainable horticulture-related projects.

The application deadline is Nov. 30.

Grants support projects that promote the love of gardening, community beautification, environmentally responsible horticultural practices, and conservation through education and by example.

Applications and information about the annual grant program are available at www.chelseagardenclub.com, on Facebook at Chelsea Garden Club or by calling Charlene Harris at 734-433-9773.

Applications, postmarked no later than Nov. 30, should be mailed to the CAGC Grant Program, P.O. Box 519, Chelsea, MI 48118. Applicants in the CAGC service area— Chelsea and western Washtenaw County—will be given preference.

Grant recipients will report on their projects at the garden club’s noon meeting Oct. 8, 2018 at Chelsea First United Methodist Church.

The club awarded 2017 grants to:

  • The Chelsea Senior Center for its Intergenerational Garden Summer Intern Program. The intergenerational program serves children ages 4 to 13 and provides local produce to seniors. The intern worked with volunteers and helped maintain the garden and hoop house.
  • Chelsea Farmers Market for children’s gardening activities Saturday mornings May through October to increase children’s understanding of where food comes from and encourage them to shop for and grow their own food.
  • Chelsea District Library for its Imagination in Bloom Fairy Garden. The whimsical space is used for educational and environmental programs.
  • Faith in Action for plantings to beautify the entrance at the agency’s Chelsea facility.
  • Dexter District Library for two elevated gardens for a new seed library. The library seeks to create a perpetual resource for regionally hardy heirloom and open pollinated vegetable and flowers. Nearly 1,200 individual seed packets were provided free to library patrons.
  • The CAGC also awarded a $1,000 scholarship to 2017 Chelsea High School graduate Anna Vanneste, who is pursuing earth and environmental sciences, French and Francophone studies at the University of Michigan. She was the alumni arbor coordinator for the Chelsea High School Arbor Club.

The CAGC raises money for horticulture-related grants and scholarships and for civic beautification through its spring plant sale.

The 2018 plant sale will be held 8 a.m.- noon May 12 at the Chelsea Community Fairgrounds, 20501 W. Old U.S. Highway 12.
