For the sixth straight year, the Chelsea boys’ track and field team captured the regional championship at Milan High School besting second-place Tecumseh, 128.5-100 on Saturday.
“Winning a regional (title) over 15 other teams is tough enough, but to continue it for six consecutive years is quite a feat,” said coach Eric Swager.
The coach called the meet “a very satisfying performance. We really did not have any poor performances across the board. All the places I thought we could score, we did.”
The Bulldogs earned regional medals in every event except the two hurdle races.
Among the highlights:
- Hunter White had an amazing day – finishing fourth in all three sprint races, while anchoring our scoring 4×400 relay. He had a hand in 19 of the Bulldog’s points.
- The distance crew scored a combined 74 points in those 4 events. “It really was cool to watch us take 5 of the top 7 places in the 3200, and 4 of the top 7 in the mile.
- Tom Oates led the charge, with a hand in three first place finishes – but all the scoring distance guys had great days.
State qualifiers:
- 1600 Run – Tom Oates, Carson Rabbitt, Jensen Holm
- 3200 Run – Tom Oates, Jensen Holm
- 800 Run – Tom Oates
- 4x 800 Relay – Oates, Holm, Rabbitt, Connor Gilbreath
- Discus – James Mida
“This really was a satisfying day – and I would especially like to thank all the assistant coaches who made this possible,” Swager said. “We have a crew of talented, dedicated individuals that provide a quality experience year after year for these kids.”
The Bulldogs head to the state meet on Saturday, June 2 in Zeeland.
