Chelsea City Council OK’s Charity Gaming License for Friends of the Chelsea Area Scouts

The Chelsea City Council discussed and approved a number of business items at its May 1 meeting, which included adopting a resolution for a charitable gaming license for the non-profit organization Friends of the Chelsea Area Scouts, which is the first step in allowing the group to sell raffle tickets during Sounds and Sights on Thursday Nights.

According to the agenda item summary, Friends of the Chelsea Area Scouts is a new local non-profit organization with a purpose of raising funds for both boy and girl scouts in Chelsea.

The raffle winners will be drawn on the last night of Sounds and Sights.

The City Council also unanimously adopted on second reading an ordinance amendment of the zoning map to rezone an about 16-acre parcel from Mobile Home Residential District (MH-1) to Multiple Family Residential District-High Density (RM-2).

The parcel is located on Cavanaugh Lake Road west of Cleveland Street and is owned by Norfolk Development Corporation of Sylvan, LTD. It is bordered on the south by Cavanaugh Lake Road and on the west and north by Westchester Farms development in Sylvan Township. To the east is a single-family residence.

The City Council also approved the continuation of the city’s 80/20 cost sharing for health insurance in which the city pays 80 percent of the costs and employees pay 20 percent.

In addition, the city will participate for the fourth time in disposing of unneeded city items in an annual auction run by Braun and Helmer auctioneers that will take place in early June at the Washtenaw County Fairgrounds.

On May 8, the City Council will hold back-to-back work sessions beginning at 6 p.m. The first work session is a continuation of the budget work session and the second work session is expected to begin at 7:30 p.m. to discuss the Wolf property.

The City Council also discussed the role of the city’s Chelsea Human Rights Commission, which will be the topic of a separate story tomorrow.
