The mission of the Chelsea District Library (CDL) is to engage, inspire, and equip through evolving services and resources.
This commitment is highlighted in its Artist in Residence Program, which offers an opportunity for artists of all medium to share their talents with the Chelsea community through programming, exhibits, and one-on-one exchanges.
The library is pleased to announce that this year’s program features nationally recognized photographer and author Rose Eichenbaum.
Eichenbaum has been a contributing writer and photographer for national magazines including Dance, Dance Teacher, and Dance Spirit. She has photographed many dance greats including Mikhail Baryshnikov and Cynthia Gregory, as well as the Martha Graham Dance Company and Joffrey Ballet, among others.
Her photographs have been the subject of numerous one-woman shows including Masters of Movement: Portraits of America’s Great Choreographers, a three-year traveling exhibition hosted by the Smithsonian Institution. Her books include The Number on My Grandfather’s Arm, Masters of Movement: Portraits of America’s Great Choreographers, The Dancer Within, The Actor Within, The Director Within, and Inside the Dancer’s Art.
Eichenbaum is currently the official photographer for the USC Glorya Kaufman School of Dance and the Director of the Art of Photographing Workshop at Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival. She has also interviewed and photographed performing and screen artists, including Mel Brooks, Peter Bogdanovich, John Carpenter, Elliott Gould, and Elijah Wood.
During her three-day stay in Chelsea, Eichenbaum will share her insight and expertise with photographers working in all genres: portraiture, landscape, action, nature, etc. She will facilitate two workshops: one for novice photographers (July 12 at 6 p.m.) and the other for seasoned photographers (July 12 at 7 p.m.). Additionally, photographers may book a 15-minute session with her where she will engage in a portfolio assessment on July 14. All programs are free of charge and open to everyons.

On Saturday, July 14, catch Eichenbaum up close and personal at a reception at 320 N. Main Street from 6-8 p.m. where she will share stories from her illustrious career and the subjects she has photographed. Copies of her latest book, Inside the Dancer’s Art will be available for purchase and signing courtesy of Serendipity Books. The reception is open to everyone.
To celebrate Eichenbaum’s visit to our community, the Chelsea District Library has installed Rose in Retrospect: Photographic Works in Exhibition in the lobby of the Library through July 14.
This exhibition is a striking collection of performance, studio, and on-location dance photography, along with portraits of iconic dancers and individuals from around the world. All 19 professionally framed images are available for purchase, with proceeds benefiting the Library’s Artist Residency Program.
