Chelsea Field Hockey (CFH) goalkeepers Nina Faupel and Payton Doan were selected for USA Field Hockey’s National Futures Championship in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, June 20-29.

Faupel and Doan competed in a Regional Futures Tournament at University of Louisville in Kentucky in early May. Faupel, a member of CFH’s Beach Middle School team, earned a spot to compete in the U14 division. Doan, a member of CFH’s Varsity team, was selected as an alternate in the U16 division.

Faupel is a returning Nationals player. She competed at the 2016 National Futures Championship as well.

Futures is the pipeline for Olympic development. All field hockey athletes can participate in time trials in the fall to demonstrate foot and stick skills, and agility and speed, after which an invitation is issued to train with Futures-appointed coaches in the spring.

Athletes then have the option to compete at a Regional Futures Tournament. Futures coaches select the top players at the regional tournament to compete at the National Futures Championship. Afterward, elite athletes are chosen to compete in the Junior Olympics. Chelsea Field Hockey has had three athletes reach this prestigious level.

Field hockey is a fast-action sport that combines agility, speed, tactical play and stick work. Youth entering 6th through 12th grades are invited to sign up for Chelsea Field Hockey’s fall season now. Registration is open at www.chelseafieldhockey.org to join the Chelsea High School (9th-12th) and Beach Middle School (6th-8th) teams. No experience is necessary.
