Chelsea Field Hockey notches two wins last week

(Chelsea Update would like to thank Allen Wright for the information in this story.)

On Sept. 29, the Ann Arbor Greenhills field hockey team came to face Chelsea that had just came off the biggest win in the team’s history over Pioneer.

The Gryphons were hoping to catch the Bulldogs off guard, thinking they might be having that “big victory hangover”, after giving so much against Pioneer. But a very experienced Chelsea Head Coach Leslie Fry knows better and, although still elated over such a huge program victory, had her team focused and ready for the Greenhills game.

If there was any kind of lagging, it didn’t last long as senior captain Maggie Cole split the defense with some excellent dribbling and blasted a shot past the Gryphons goaltender. Just before the half it was Rose Barelds who literally shot the ball from mid-air past the surprised Gryphons goalie to put Chelsea up 2-0 at the half.

It was Barelds first goal of the year.

After a brief intermission it was Maggie Cole again with her second goal of the game. A minute and a half later it was senior Gabbie Wink putting the ball in net to put Chelsea up 4-0. That is where it would stand as a stifling Chelsea defense made goaltender Payton Doan‘s night easier for her, by allowing no shots on goal!

Chelsea finished the night with 13 penalty corners and 10 shots on goal.

On Oct. 1, Chelsea went on the road for the eighth time this season travelling to Bloomfield Township to face off against the Academy of the Sacred Heart.

It didn’t take long for Chelsea to introduce themselves as at less then 2 minutes into the game it was the hard working Maggie Cole feeding the ball to Jackie Busch putting the ball past the Gazelles goaltender, for Busch’s very well deserved first goal of the season.

It would stay 1-0 until after half when the senior captain Cole scored unassisted on her hard shot. Nine minutes later Cole fed the ball to her senior teammate Jessi Olmsted who scored her third goal of the season.

The defense played very hard and were forcing turnovers and blocking passing lanes to keep the Gazelles off the board and to open up the game for Chelsea as Cole scored two more goals on the night from great feeds from Gabbie Wink to lead Chelsea to a 5-0 victory.

Cole completed the hat trick and had two helpers for a 5 point night. The Chelsea defense held Sacred Heart to only 3 shots on goal while Chelsea put up 17 of their own. Chelsea had 11 penalty corners on the night while Sacred Heart only had 2.

Chelsea plays Grosse Pointe South on Wednesday at home.
