Chelsea girls soccer splits with Dexter in pair of 1-0 games

Chelsea girls soccer won and lost today against 12th ranked Dexter.

After the JV was beaten 5-0 and the varsity defeated 6-1 in our previous games, the Bulldogs came out to play hard and prove they can compete with strong teams like Dexter.

The JV team played a great game. Though the first 69 minutes of play against Dexter it was a scoreless tie but in that final minute that Hannah Wyatt found the back of the net to give the Dogs a terrific 1-0 victory.

The varsity team took the field next, and Chelsea lost a 1-0 game when a Dexter player picked up a loose ball inside the Penalty Area, beat an opponent for an open shot at goal and knocked it past Chelsea’s GK Natasha McElrath. Otherwise, she had played a great game, helping keep her team in the game on one or two critical saves.

Though the Bulldogs kept trying to crack a tough Dexter defense, they were unable to create that chance to knock in the goal.

Though the team lost, we celebrated a significantly stronger performance against our rivals by playing hard and cheering on our seniors during half time said coach Shawn Hayes.

Due to some technical difficulties, (I think we blew out our speakers in warm-ups) we were unable to announce over the PA, but this year’s seniors have meant so much to our team and program over the years.

Mary Hermann, Hanna Clark, Shayla Chebbi, Kaye Nelson and our exchange student from Austria, Julia Vynhalek, all received recognition during the half time celebration. Thanks to coach Jordan Miller for using his voice, Hayes said.

Chelsea plays at Ann Arbor Pioneer tonight for the final regular season game. On Tuesday, May 31, Chelsea will host Tecumseh for the first round game in districts. The game will begin at 5 p.m.
