The Chelsea girls tennis team took 2nd place in its regionals on Saturday, losing to Grosse Ile, and Matt Pedlow, the girls’ coach was named Region 19 Tennis Coach of the Year.

Grosse Ile finished the day with 30 points, Chelsea had 22, Parma Western finished in 3rd place with 16 points.

Chelsea now moves on to the State Finals on May 28.

Chelsea sent 6 out of 8 flights to the finals, but lost to a tough Grosse Ile team in 5 of them.

“Grosse Ile won the state title last year,” said coach Matt Pedlow. “They’re a well coached team and the girls just don’t make many unforced errors. They are tough to defeat when they’re playing well.”

Going to the regional finals were the following flights:
1 singles: Katie Lee
2 singles: Mackenzie Benning
3 singles: Callie Brannon
1 doubles: Sam Jabara and Erin Koch
3 doubles: Carrie Williams and Joy McCarthy
4 doubles: Alison Staelgrave and Taylor Schrock

“Two of the girls on the team have played four years of varsity for me, and I have coached most of the other girls for at least the past two seasons,” Pedlow said, adding, “I’ll be losing 8 out of 12 girls from this team, and it’ll be a tough loss for us as they carry so much depth and experience.”

Last year, Chelsea finished 10th in the state and the goal of the girls all season has been to improve on that.
