Chelsea girls’ track and field competes in Mason Invite, focusing on individual athletes

At the Mason Invitational on Friday, April 27, the Chelsea girls’ track and field team took a more individual route in how the Lady Bulldogs’ competed working toward mid-season goals for the athletes.

Overall, Chelsea finished 13th with 24 points out of 17 schools.

Corunna won the meet with 77.5 points, Mason was second with 69 points, Traverse City West was third with 55 points and Dexter was fourth with 51.5 points.

“This was a large and very competitive meet,” said coach Loren Thorburn, who added, “We ran more individual races at Mason in order help our athletes achieve personal mid-season goals. “

The result? Four personal records set, five seasonal records, and seven top-eight places.

“As a coaching staff, we felt good about the outcome of the meet and the positive attitudes of our athletes,” he said.

Highlights:

  • Kaehla Manly placed 3rd in the 300m hurdles with a time of 51.44.
  • Sydney Matusik placed 3rd in the 800m run with a PR of 2:26.43.
  • Riley Davis placed in a 3-way tie in the high jump with a height of 4′ 10″.
  • Jenna Gileczek placed 6th in pole vault with a height of 9′ 6″.
  • Jordan Holton placed 7th in the discus (99′ 2″) and 8th in the shot (30′ 9″).
  • Myranda Montoye placed 7th in the 800m dash with a time of 2:30.18 – a PR!
  • Ailish Joyce ran a PR in the 100m hurdles with a time of 21.06 and a season-best time in the 400m dash with a time of 68.38.
  • Emily Chizek ran a 12:09.92 in the 3200m run. “She ran very hard in the 1st mile and hung on to run a personal record. She continues to improve in the distance races,” the coach said.

Chelsea Track and Field will host Pinckney and Tecumseh on Tuesday, May 1, for the last home meet of the season. Please support the team and head to the football stadium to root on both track teams. To understand what you’ll be watching, click here.
