The Chelsea girls’ track and field team finished second in the regional meet to Adrian, 80-74.5

The Adrian team performed very well in their key events, said coach Loren Thorburn, while Chelsea was not able to match their big performances in all of the team’s main events.

“Overall, I feel our team was well prepared and a had a number of memorable moments. We just came up short in some important events to win the Regional title,” he said.

Individually, Chelsea had seven athletes qualify for the State Meet, which will be held on June 2 at Zealand East/West High School track and field facility.

In order to qualify for the State Meet for track and field, individuals and relays must be a regional champion (1st place), regional runner-up (2nd), or make the additional State Meet qualifying standards on the day of the regional meet, which is very difficult to do.

Those that qualified were:

  • Jenna Gileczek (Regional Runner-up) in the pole vault;
  • Allison Hause (Regional Runner-up) in the 1600m run;
  • Kaehla Manly (Regional Champion) in the 300m hurdles and the 4x400m relay*;
  • Sydney Matusik in the 400m dash (Regional Runner-up) and 4x400m relay*;
  • Sabrina Matusko in the pole vault;
  • Myranda Montoye in the 400m dash and the 4x400m relay*;
  • Riley Thorburn in the 4x400m relay*.
  • *4x400m relay was Regional Champions.

Special Performances (i.e., Personal Records and Season Best Times/Marks)

  • Jenna Gileczek and Sabrina Matusko both were within inches of setting Personal Records (PRs) in the pole vault on Friday at the Pole Vault Regional held in Chelsea.
  • Myranda Monotoye improved her time by all most two seconds in the 400m dash and went on to run anchor in the 4x400m relay. Myranda out kicked the Ann Arbor Gabriel Richard anchor runner in the last 70 meters to win the race for her team.
  • Kaehla Manly ran her season best race in the 300m hurdles in the pouring rain and in out right fashion.
  • Sydney Matusik ran her season best time in the 400m dash and placed 2nd. Jacqueline Taylor helped her team place 5th in the 4x800m relay by running a season best split in the 4×800 with a time of 2:39.
  • Leah Burgess ran the lead-off in the 4x100m relay and had one of her best 100m split times ever.
  • One of the biggest improvements (PRs) was Jamie Gorman throwing 1 foot 9.5″ more than her best throw to date (25′ 0.25″ to 26′ 9.75″).
  • Allison Hause dropped almost 16 seconds in 1600m time by running 5:18.39 to capture 2nd place, which is a considerable amount of dropped time and very gutsy performance.

“We have the Churchill Field Event Meet on Tuesday, May 22. This followed by the Larry Steeb Meet of Champions held at Dexter High School track and field facility before the State Meet in Zeeland on June 2.
