Chelsea Human Rights Commission Proposed Bylaws Discussion By City Council Aug. 7

By Lisa Carolin

The Chelsea Human Rights Commission received a complaint on July 24, but it will not follow up on the complaint until the commission’s bylaws are approved.

The board unanimously (Lynn Fox absent) adopted a motion at its Aug. 2 meeting to table discussion of the complaint until its Aug.16 meeting and to notify the person who submitted the complaint of the delay.

The Chelsea City Council is expected to consider the Human Rights Commission’s proposed bylaws at its Aug. 7 meeting.

The Human Rights Commission also discussed a survey it is creating.

Member Susan Morrel-Samuels suggested, “Let’s make the survey general and brief, focus on activities related to social justice and human rights, ask about Chelsea’s strengths and weaknesses, and ideas for initiatives and education.”

Morrel-Samuels suggested that presenting the results of the survey at a proposed public meeting this fall would be a time to organize discussion around issues that are brought up in the surveys.

Commission members agreed to further edit the survey in time for its Aug. 16 meeting. The survey is based on a human rights survey from the United Nations’ International Center for Human Rights Education.
