New director Lori Coryell will be getting ready to look at a 3-year strategic plan for the Chelsea District Library (CDL). The plan will be for 2017-19 and Coryell expects to have something for board review by the fall.

“It’s a long, detailed process,” Coryell said.

Coryell said she would get out to the various township offices to connect with local leaders. She has a meeting set with Chelsea Mayor Jason Lindauer and wants to meet with Chelsea’s school interim Superintendent Dave Killips as well.

In other news:

The library staff is doing some preliminary work on a celebration of the 10th anniversary of becoming a district library.

The celebration will be in August since the weather is nicer. The event will probably fall after the last week of Sounds and Sights and the opening of the Chelsea Fair. Some early talk mentions a barbecue and music on the lawn.

The Friends of the Library will have their annual meeting Saturday, Jan. 30 at the library. The meeting begins at 10:30 a.m. in the McKune Room.

The event will include a review of the past year and the election of new officers.

The Friends group will take a look at the library’s wish list and set two to three goals for the year.

The process of the monthly book sale by the Friends was discussed at the Jan. 19 CDL board meeting.

Through the Friends group and library staff, around 6,000 books are donated each month. The books are weeded through and ones that are considered valuable ($4 or more) are sent to an Ann Arbor firm who sells them online and splits the profits with the library.

The library can make as much $300 to $400 per month from the online sales.

The January book sale netted $850 in what officials called a good month. Books are sold at $5 a bag. Books that are unsold after three sales are donated to senior citizen centers and prisons.
