The Chelsea Planning Commission met on Tuesday, July 15 to discuss the final site plan for the proposed Speedway gas station and convenience store on the northwest corner of M-52 and Old U.S. 12.

Representatives from EXP U.S. Service Inc. of Columbus, Ohio, along with representatives from Speedway had their final site plan unanimously approved by the planning commission to construct the 3,900-square foot, single-story Speedway where the Rich gas station and Wolverine now stand.

Some technical details still need to be worked out, such as type of outdoor lighting to be used, and the resolution of some landscaping issues, as well as final agreement about placement of products Speedway wishes to put outside for sale, including mulch, and windshield washer fluid.

Commencement of construction is contingent upon EXP and Speedway resolving these technical details to the satisfaction of the planning commission.

Both parties are also awaiting approval from the Washtenaw County Road Commission and MDOT for driveway placement, and how the entrances/exits are to be utilized.

In other news, the annual election of officers saw a motion unanimously approved to re-elect George Kinzer as chairman of the planning commission, Erik Larsen as vice chairman, and Nick Helmholdt as secretary.

  1. Can we get more information on this rendering? What angle is this from? Or are there any other renderings? Also, is Chelsea progressing towards a standard upscale sign methodology? I was a bit disappointed when the AutoZone installed an in-the-air sign as opposed to the more aesthetically pleasing ground sign that other recent businesses (Polly’s) uses. It would be nice to standardize and be consistent.
