The Chelsea girls tennis team recently won the SEC White title for the 6th consecutive year, winning 23 out of 24 matches.

The only loss of the day was at 1 singles. Coach Matt Pedlow said, Kelsie Weinreich played a great match but lost to Erin Evans 6-2, 6-3.

“Although I obviously was hoping Kelsie would win, Erin is a really nice player who deserved the victory,” Pedlow said.

At 2 singles, Kyra Van Batavia solidly defeated Dexter 6-3, 6-1 after a tough loss a few weeks ago in the regular season.

“I had to pull Kyra at the beginning of the 3rd set that day as she was struggling with shoulder issues. I’m glad she was able to play a full match today, she had some great shots and never gave her opponent a chance to set herself up to hit winners. Both girls played well and had some great shots, it was probably the best match of the day,” Pedlow said.

The rest of the flights all played well and took first place.

In addition, our JV team finished the season undefeated again. Coach Tom Osbeck has done a great job building up one of the largest and most successful JV teams in the state.

“The girls love playing for Tom, and he has had a number of seasons in which the girls finish undefeated,” Pedlow said.

“We had the JV girls play a few varsity matches this season and they won at every flight,” Osbeck said. “Some of the girls didn’t lose a single set this season, I’m very proud of the level of play. Many of these girls are now starting in middle school. Coach Atkinson has done a great job building up a huge middle school team that has certainly had a lot of wins, so by the time they’re at the JV level they are ahead of their peers.”

Pedlow said the varsity team benefits greatly by having two assistant coaches.

Coach Misha Moore is the team mom, he said, the girls love having Misha coach them, and she is the one they often turn to for advice and comfort after a tough loss.

Coach Brian Tucker has also been a huge asset to have in our program, Pedlow said, Adding, “Tuck has been helping out over the past 8 seasons and we’re very fortunate to have him. His level of knowledge is extensive, and he and Misha share a passion and enthusiasm that is infectious. Tom and I are very, very lucky to have both of these coaches in our program. “
