Both the Chelsea varsity and the JV cross country teams were champions at the New Boston Invitational on Sept. 13.

The varsity team won the event with 28 points, besting Lincoln, with 61 points, Dearborn with 81 points and Farmington Harrison with 116 points. There were seven teams in Division 1.

The JV team won its meet with 18 points, beating Tecumseh with 67 points, Carleton Airport with 113 points and Dearborn with 131 points. There were 11 full teams in the invitational.

“We had a strong place showing across the board, winning the Division 1 race handily, as well as the JV trophy and the Reserve JV contest,” said Cross Country Coach Eric Swager.

He said nine runners had lifetime bests, including Campbell Fahle, who finished in the top 10 in his first  varsity cross country race.

Several JV runners had big personal record performances, including Jeremy Northrop (breaking 19 minutes for the first time and winning the JV contest). In addition, Josh Cole, Sam Olsen (who won the JV reserve race), Matt Rosolowski and Kirby Hubbard – who took 2 minutes off his time for the second straight race.

“We will be tested this weekend at the Jackson Invite, where basically the entire regional lineup will compete,” the coach said, adding, “I am excited to see how we stack up against this quality field.”

He said the team needs to “focus on running our daily workouts at the proper pace and effort, and if so, we will continue to improve as we move along.”
