The Chelsea varsity lacrosse team (1-1) lost last week to Divine Child, 9-5, last week.

Goal Scorers were: Baily Weatherwax – 2 goals, Chris Hudson – 1 goal, Tyler Stealgreave – 1 goal, Johna Bogarin – 1 goal, Christian Clippert – 1 assist and Ryan O’Quinn – 1 assist.

Goalie Dustin Beckett recorded 7 saves.

“The weather was finally nice for a game and we were not prepared to play,” said Varsity Lacrosse Coach Joe Koengeter.

“Offensively,” he said, “We made bad passes, dropped passes, and turned the ball over.  Defensively, we didn’t communicate or play the body. We were chasing sticks all night.”

Divine Child had 15 penalties during the game, the coach said and Chelsea only converted on 2 extra man opportunities; that was the difference in the game.

The coach said the opponents gave the Bulldogs every opportunity to win the game but the team couldn’t capitalize on the opportunities.

The team (2-1) then bounced back against Belleville, 12-5, later in the week.

Although the conditions prior to the game were cold and rainy but the rain stopped for the game.

The team had a big first quarter with 4 goals and a big 3rd quarter with 5 goals.

“We are still not playing to our full potential though I don’t want to take anything away from a win,” the coach said.

“The first and third quarters of the game show what we are capable of doing, we just need to figure out a way to do that for an entire game.  Defensively we played well, with only a few breakdowns,” he said.

Goal Scorers were Weatherwax: 3 goals, 3 assists, Hudson, 4 goals, O’Quinn, 1 goal, 2 assists, Mike Beneteau, 1 goal, 1 assist, Clippert, 2 goals, Austin Freeman, 1 goal – his first of the season.

Beckett had 7 saves in goal.

“This was our last game before spring break,” Koengeter said, adding, “2-1 is a good start to the season but it is not where the team wanted to be.”

The team starts SEC play when the players return from spring break with a home game against Lincoln on April 16.

“This will be a good test for us as some players are out of town on spring break and will not be at practice,” Koengeter said. “This is one of the hardest aspects of spring sports (along with the weather).”
