Chelsea varsity lacrosse posts 9-win season; best in Bulldog team history

(Chelsea Update would like to thank Chelsea High School Varsity Lacrosse coach Joe Koengeter for the information in 2014 season recap.)

“This was a very successful season, as we had the most wins in the program history,” said Coach Joe Koengeter, in his third year as head coach for the lacrosse program.

Below is a summary of the 2014 Bulldog varsity lacrosse season.

The team finished with a 9-9 record – previously, the most wins the team posted was 7 in both 2012 and 2013.

Bulldog lacrosse finished third in the SEC White Division and won the first round home playoff game against Ann Arbor Greenhills, 14-4.

The team had three 1st team All Conference players:

  • Baily Weatherwax (senior, midfield)
  • Chris Hudson (senior, attack)
  • Dominick Goderis (junior, defense)

The team also two honorable mention All Conference players:

  • Christian Clippert (senior, attack)
  • Jonah Bogarin (junior, attack)

The SEC sportsmanship award (chosen by the SEC coaches:

  • Devon Conti (junior, midfield)

Chelsea coaches awards:

  • Most improved: Austin Freeman (senior, attack)
  • Hustle award: Zach Trester (junior, defense)
  • Offensive MVP: Baily Weatherwax (senior, midfield)
  • Defensive MVP: Dominic Goderis (junior, defense)

Academic awards:

  •     Baily Weatherwax
  •     Tyler Stealgreave

“We have had players in the past go on to play in college, but this year fur of the nine graduating seniors will go on to play at the next level,” said Koengeter, who added, “That shows the hard work and dedication that they have put into the fastest growing sport in the country.”
Players going on to play in college:

  • Austin Freeman, Defiance College
  • Baily Weatherwax, Defiance College
  • Christian Clippert, Central Michigan University
  • Grant Bater, Defiance College

“Every year, I wish I had one more year with the seniors,” he said, adding, “They have done such a great job of buying into the program that we, as a coaching staff, are implementing.”

Koengeter said, “I had a chance to coach most of this senior class for three years, and watching them grow from where they were to where they are now as student athletes and young men is the reason people coach.”
