Chelsea’s Human Rights Commission Approves Bylaws

By Lisa Carolin

At its July 18 meeting, Chelsea’s Human Rights Commission’s members voted unanimously (Elizabeth Voshel absent) to approve bylaws that include purpose, objectives, and duties, membership, ethics and conflicts of interest, as well as officers, meetings, and parliamentary authority.

Those bylaws must now be approved by the Chelsea City Council, which will tentatively consider them at its Aug. 7 meeting.

The HRC also discussed creating a survey based on a human rights survey from the United Nations’ International Center for Human Rights Education.

HRC members agreed that they would each highlight parts of the survey that they think are important in order to make it fit their needs. The goal is to have local nonprofits, businesses, and individuals fill out the survey.

Finalizing the survey will be the first step in planning a public meeting that the HRC would like to organize this fall.
