The Chelsea City Council recently approved a request by Jason Povlich, owner of Jet’s Pizza, to host a benefit concert for Project 418, which needed both a temporary use and a noise ordinance variance to take place.

Povlich plans to bring in Rusted Root, an acoustic band, for a special event inside a tent in the Jet’s Pizza parking lot on Main Street on July 16.

The fact the concert will take place near a residential area concerned Council Member Melissa Johnson, who asked the applicant if he had looked at ways to keep the noise levels down.

“I don’t expect it to hurt any feelings,” Povlich said. “A lot of the neighbors come to Jet’s and I’ve spoken to them about it. Actually, they are pretty excited,” he said.

In addition, the sound will be pointed in a different direction, toward the commercial area, he said.

Council Member Rod Anderson, who voted against a variance to the noise ordinance request, asked if there were any complaints about noise after 10 p.m., “You’d rectify it, right?”

Although Anderson said he supported what the applicant was doing, the request was not “what the ordinance says.”

The City Council unanimously granted the request for a temporary use for the concert, but it was a 5-1 vote for approval for a variance to the noise ordinance.

The applicant was told that the music could not go later than 11 p.m. and he was asked to comply with several other conditions, including placing a fence around the tent and concert area, having traffic control and security before, during and after the event.
