Seventy-two Chelsea High School (CHS) students in the Class of 2018 were recognized for their outstanding academic performance at the 45th annual Cum Laude Honors Banquet on May 16.

CHS administration and the Chelsea Area Women’s Service Club co-hosted the dinner, which was held in the high school Commons.

Students who have earned an unweighted grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.667 over the course of their high school careers and their parents, are eligible to attend the event.

Additionally, the students recommend a district teacher, employee, or coach to attend with them as their “honored educator,” according to CHS Assistant Principal Andrew Neidlinger

Designated distinctions for GPAs are as follows: 3.667-3.777 — Cum Laude, 3.778-3.888 — Magna Cum Laude, and 3.889-4.0 — Summa Cum Laude.

Ella Fritzemeier, CHS Class of 2013, was the guest speaker. Principal Mike Kapolka introduced her as “… a complete all-star and a student-leader while at Chelsea High School.” Fritzemeier was, among other things, heavily involved in music, and participated in cross country and track, Link Crew, and student council. She graduated summa cum laude and went on to double major in finance and economics at Grand Valley State University, where she participated in the student senate for four years.

She currently works in the finance development program for Whirlpool Corporation.

Fritzemeier told the students that regardless of their current plans, they can expect to face many challenges in the days and years ahead. She shared a sampling of some of the opportunities she recognized and chose to take advantage of over the last five years, including serving in the student senate and working as a resident advisor. She told them that doing new things will help to determine and define their passions.

“Take a chance, Class of 2018,” she said in closing.
