2016-kiwanis-fruit-sale(Chelsea Update would like to thank Bob Milbrodt for the information in this story.)

Monday should be the day the delivery of fresh fruit arrives from Florida for the Chelsea Kiwanis Club‘s 41st Annual Kiwanis Fruit Sale.

If you haven’t had a chance to order some navel oranges, Orlando tangelos, or red grapefruit, some extras have been ordered.

Please call 734-747-1886 and leave a message. It is possible some will be available before they are all gone.

Trinh Pifer, Chelsea Senior Center executive director and Jim Alford, senior center president, gave an interesting presentation outlining the services provided by the Senior Center to the Chelsea Kiwanis Club.

Their mission is to enhance the quality of life and well-being for area seniors and their families. The center is well used and appreciated by attendees.

In the year ending June 30, they received 838 requests for resources in their C2S2 program that uses volunteers to help other seniors with small projects around the house. More than 30,400 senior meals were served during that time, of which 78 percent were Meals on Wheels. Many activities are offered, such as computer and tech support, a book club, ukulele and special musical performances, games and social groups, arts and crafts, traveling with friends, and volunteering.

The Senior Center achieved record membership of 850 and has expanded to Grass Lake. Chelsea Senior Center is also inter-generational, working with preschoolers, high school and college students.

Last Monday, the club celebrated its Kiwanis family, hosting Chelsea and Dexter Key Clubs and advisors. The Dexter Key Club has helped Faith in Action gathering food and UNICEF by collecting money while trick or treating. The Chelsea Key Club had a successful shoe drive to benefit the Kiwanis/UNICEF project to eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus. They helped rake leaves for several seniors, and have projects planned with their fellow students in school with developmental disabilities.

Both Key Clubs will be at St. Joseph Mercy Chelsea Hospital Saturday morning helping with games and crafts for the hospital families’ Breakfast with Santa.

The club meeting begins each Monday at 6:15 p.m. in the St. Joseph Mercy Chelsea Hospital cafeteria, and the speakers begin at about 6:45 p.m.

Everyone is invited to the club’s meetings to learn about Kiwanis.
