Dedication ceremony held for Sylvan Township’s Maple Grove Cemetery

(Chelsea Update would like to thank Rod Branham for the information in this story and for providing photos of the dedication ceremony Sunday when I was unable to attend. They are contained in a photo gallery below.)

There was a dedication ceremony held on Sunday, Oct. 26 for the Maple Grove Cemetery in Sylvan Township, which underwent a facelift.

Here’s what was said:

“First of all, I would like to thank you all for coming out.

This has been a long haul to get the cemetery to the stage it is in now. It was long neglected and in desperate need of getting the respect that our ancestors of Sylvan deserve. I want to thank Sandy Crawford for the nudge to get the ball rolling on the makeover.

I want to thank Jim Kalmbach of Jim’s Scrap Iron for his hard work on the road and tearing out the old rusted tree and vine encrusted fence. But most of all, for his work repairing broken headstones and resetting fallen headstones.

I want to thank Irish Hills Fence for the beautiful job they did on installing the new fence.

But most of all, I would like to thank Rick DeTroyer for his spectacular work on the entrance arch and the exit gates. He did an outstanding job with it. And, there is an artist “secret” embedded in the entry arch. See if anyone can figure it out. If you do, please let me know and we will announce it at our board meeting.

We have one more small detail to get done and that is the old sign that was standing near the entry describing what you can put on the graves. If anyone knows a good sign painter, please let me know.

Thank you all.”
