Lynae MacLellan, owner of Devil’s Haircut, approached the Chelsea American Legion earlier this summer and told members she’d like to conduct a cut-a-thon to benefit veterans.

Post 31 members were thrilled for her support, but what they didn’t expect was the overwhelming support shown by not only the new business owner but also by the community.

“It brought tears to my eyes,” said Craig Maier, financial officer for Post 31, “The community support was incredible.”

Earlier this month, MacLellan arrived at a subsequent Post 31 meeting and handed the veteran’s a check for $2,500, which will be used for the Legion’s work with local veterans.

Maier said it went from what they expected to be “a few haircuts to a huge, huge event.”

He said in addition to MacLellan and her staff’s hard work, local businesses and vendors donated a percentage of their profits from the day.

Devil’s Haircut hosted Summer Salute 2016 and offered complimentary haircuts to first responders in the local and surrounding areas.

The Cut-A-Thon was held on Friday, July 29 from noon to 7 p.m., all haircuts were $15, and 100 percent of proceeds were donated.

Nearly 20 local businesses showed their support by getting involved with the Cut-A-Thon, including Arbor One Mortgage Group that provided a bounce house, UAW Local 190 and Precision Spinal Care provided a dunk tank, and Thrivent Financial provided the hot dog bar, MacLellan said.

Other business sold their goods to help raise money for the American Legion, including Rebecca Palmer with LuLaRoe and Nancy Shipway with Stella and Dot, who agreed to donate a portion of their commissions. Pat Deere with Send Out Cards provided the service of sending a card to an active military person on duty.

Their contribution, along with the proceeds generated from Devil’s Haircut sales, meant that the American Legion can engage with more disabled veterans with activities, provide more homeless veterans housing, and more Chelsea students can receive scholarships from Post 31, she said.

Devil’s Haircut is a hair salon that opened in Chelsea in February.

“We offer a fully customizable salon experience based on you,” MacLellan said, adding, “Our goal is to create a comfortable and fun place with talented stylists who have the ability to foster confidence from the outside-in.”

Devil’s Haircut is located at 1250 S. Main St. Suite 3A. They can be reached at 734-719-0015.
