The DTE Energy Foundation Trail had the grand opening of its first loop on June 16. It’s called the Green Lake loop, and it’s 5.2 miles long.

The trail is located five miles north of Chelsea west of M-52 across from Stofer Hill and less than half a mile south of North Territorial Road.

“This is the first sustainably engineered mountain biking trail in southeast Michigan,” said Kathy Bradbury, fundraising chair for the Waterloo Trail. “The first loop is all about bringing new people to the sport-especially the next generation. Unlike most other trails in the area, there are no roots and rocks to navigate, and no huge hill climbs.”

She says that all consideration has been given to protecting native species and large trees as well as for erosion control and drainage. The Potawatomi Mountain Biking Association contracted with Alex Stewart of Spectrum Trail Design to build the trail.

“While the trail appeals to everyone, it was designed with beginners in mind,” said Bradbury. “It is super fast. With only 50 feet of climbing, a relatively smooth surface, and a real roller coaster feel, young kids will love it.”

She compares the trail to Cedar Point but says, “It’s healthier and way less expensive!”

The Green Lake loop offers great views of Green Lake as well as ponds and woods. It has berms built in to help with speed control with the option of a path for those who wish to avoid the berms.

“We have a couple of obstacles: the boulder pile, a series of table tops and the log roll over,” said Bradbury, who adds that all of them have path options.

The trail is also open to hikers, runners and cross country skiers.

The DTE Energy Foundation Trail will soon set a date for Take a Kid Mountain Biking Day in October.
