Easton Powers takes grand champion feeder calf at the Chelsea Community Fair

Easton Powers and his grand champion feeder calf Norton.

When Easton Powers walked his feeder calf named Norton into the ring at the Chelsea Community Fair Wednesday afternoon, it was the first time he’d shown a calf at fair.

Two hours later with the judging complete, Norton was chosen as the grand champion feeder calf.

Reserve grand champion went to Adeline Stormont.

For Easton, it might have been his first time in the feeder calf ring, but it wasn’t his first time showing an animal in the Multi-Purpose Arena in the 82nd annual fair.

The night before, Easton had the reserve champion pair of pigs in the swine show.

In fact, the three Powers brothers swept three of the four top awards in the pig show.

Brother Logan Powers took home the trophy for the grand champion market hog and brother Brody Powers won reserve grand champion individual hog in one of the largest entries of pigs at the fair in many years.

And they weren’t the only siblings to take champion honors in the three biggest livestock shows at this year’s fair.

Carter and Mason Trinkle won reserve pair of pigs and reserve champion pair of lambs, respectively, while brother and sister duo of Brayden and Adalyn Gilbert won individual market lamb and pairs, respectively, in Wednesday night’s sheep show.

But on Wednesday afternoon, it was Easton Powers time to take home the grand champion trophy with his 6-month-old calf that weighed 505 pounds.

Easton, 5, said since March, when the calf came home, he began walking Norton around and feeding him.

And although sometimes he misbehaved at home, Norton “behaved in the ring,” Easton said.

With the cool temperatures Wednesday afternoon, some of the young calves were, “feeling their oats” when offered an opportunity to really stretch their legs with their young showman hanging on to the leather leads.

Brody Powers, and his favorite pig, No. 2.

While Easton put away his calf, brother Brody, headed over to visit his two pigs.

“I like No. 2 best,” he said, when asked if he had a favorite among his pair of swine that were resting in sawdust in their pens.

“I practiced with both of them, but No. 2 is my favorite, ” he said, with a big smile, patting the animal on the shoulder.

Many of the pig showman do not name their pigs, rather go by the numbers in their ear tags.

First time was a charm for Easton Powers with his feeder calf, but for the entire family, the 2018 Chelsea Community Fair will be one that’s talked about for many years to come.
