You and your three teammates could be the first to win the Chelsea Curling Cup next month.

In the spirit of Michigan’s winter weather and the upcoming Winter Olympics, which begin Feb.9, Chelsea will host its first Curling Fest on Feb. 9-10 in the parking lot next to Chelsea Lanes, 1180 S. Main St. at Chelsea Lanes.

“The (Chelsea Area) Chamber was looking for a winter event and curling was a natural fit,” said Chelsea City Manager John Hanifan about the genesis of the event.

“I can’t think of a better way to embrace winter than to throw a 42-pound stone down a 100-foot sheet of ice,” Hanifan said.

Curling is a game played on ice during which two teams slide curling stones toward a mark in a circle, according to one definition.

Don’t know how to play? No problem. There will be learn to curl ice time on Feb. 9 from 4-8 p.m.

“Curling is like shuffleboard but played on ice, and is often called ‘chess on ice with granite and brooms’,” according to information about the sport.

Here’s information from the official Curling website. https://www.teamusa.org/USA-Curling/

“Curling is a great activity for any age or skill level,” Hanifan said, adding, “Much like golf or bowling, it is easy to have a great time – yet tough to master.”

He says as word got out about the new event, “I have been amazed at the number of people who are intrigued by it and tell me ‘I watch that (curling) on TV all the time’ so we are happy to bring it live and in person to Chelsea.”

Hosted by the Chelsea Area Chamber of Commerce and sponsored by Rick Taylor Real Estate, Reinhart Realtors, Curling Fest 2018 is a 2-day event featuring a tournament on Saturday, Feb. 10 for both experienced and novice competitors, plus the learn-to-curl ice time on Feb. 9 beginning at 4 p.m.

Spectators are welcome to come and watch the “bonspiel” (term for curling tournament) free of charge and enjoy music, beer, food, hot cocoa, and more in a heated tent.

All competitors are guaranteed two matches and have a chance to win the Chelsea Curling Cup.
