The former Chelsea Center for the Arts building on 400 Congdon Street is for sale.

Built in 1920, there’s 8,641 square feet on two levels, which sits on 0.43 acre with a detached garage and a fenced-in yard. It’s zoned RS-3.

Many long-time Chelsea residents have fond memories of the building, which housed St. Mary’s School until 1962 when it closed, according to a history of the school.

In 1998, the building was purchased and donated to the Chelsea Center for the Arts and its Great Hall was used as a rehearsal space for the Purple Rose Theatre Company.

The listing is with Rick Taylor who hopes that this building with such a rich history in the community will find new life with a new owner.

“The St. Mary’s school building has benefited the community of Chelsea for 90 years helping thousands that have come through it’s doors,” Taylor said, adding, “I truly believe this building is more than just another building in town, it’s an architectural wonder and deserves a great deal of respect.”

He said he’s excited to see what this building will become in the future.

“I am honored and humbled to be given the responsibility in selling this important Chelsea landmark,” he said.

The building officially went on the market today and is expected to be listed at $299,900. For more information, click here or call him at 734-223-5656.

  1. I’m not sure where that history came from, perhaps dating to the time that it was a full 1-12 grade school, but for many years after that, the school was active through several grades. Students went through the 8th grade until the early 1970’s. After that, it continued to be used by St Mary Parish as a Religious Education Center, a home for the Knights of Columbus Bingo, and their Annual Fish Fry’s during Lent.
I hope the building gets a good owner who preserves it’s beauty.
