The Chelsea freshman football team moved to 5-1 defeating Adrian by a score of 16-0 Thursday night.

Playing in a constant rain, Chelsea won with special teams and defense. Garrett Steele had a 55-yard punt return for a touchdown. Gabe Vowles made a tackle for a safety, and Kyle Knight had a 25-yard touchdown run on a broken play.

Daniel Golding had eight tackles and caused a fumble in the game. Garrett Steele and Gabe Vowles each made 7 tackles in the game. Chelsea was able to create 5 turnovers and only turned it over once themselves. That was the difference in the game.

“Adrian was really good on defense and the weather was a factor, but we just didn’t play very well on offense,” said coach Dennis Strzyzewski. “ The defense kept giving us great field position, and we kept wasting opportunities. We did a good job of holding onto the ball, though, and that was key in a game like this.”

“I thought our defense played really well,” the coach said, citing Max Reyes, Connor Boone, and Josiah Fitch.

“They did a really good job holding their ground between the tackles, and our entire defense just played hard,” he said.

“It wasn’t pretty, but the kids competed, found a way to make some first downs to run out the clock and get the win,” he said, adding, “I am proud of their effort.”
