Now that springtime has finally arrived, there is action on the greens at the Inverness Country Club just outside of Chelsea in Dexter Township.

The private club offers nine holes as well as a practice green, driving range, clubhouse and tennis court.

Both the golf course and clubhouse are open for business.

“The course is always in great shape and it is rarely busy,” said Drew Slade, head golf professional at the club, who says that it is one of the best 9-hole clubs in the state.

There are 300 members at Inverness Country Club. The initiation fee is $500 and the yearly dues are $780.

“We offer a number of different leagues that range from Senior Scrambles, Ladies Days and Evening Men’s Leagues,” said Slade. “I am a PGA Golf Professional and am able to offer game improvement sessions to ages 6 and older as well as a Junior Golf Program that is available to members’ children and grandchildren.”

Slade says that this year non-members can join the junior program if a member sponsors them to participate.

The club also offers organized events ranging from Glow Ball Night to competitive club championships.

The club also has a tennis court with basketball hoops and a clubhouse that is available for rental by both members and the public.

The club began as a farm property purchased by Douglas Fraser in 1916 from Fred Glen. Fraser farmed the land for some years, then decided to sell off the livestock and farm machinery and build a 9-hole golf course and divide the lake property. It is now known as Park Lawn Beach Subdivision.

Fraser was from Sarnia, Ontario but was of Scottish ancestry from Inverness, Scotland, and that’s how the name was chosen for the club, which was incorporated in the 1930’s.That’s when the board of trustees (now directors) formed, and continues to operate the club.

Slade says that it is only necessary to reserve tee times between Memorial Day and Labor Day from 7-10:30 a.m. on weekends.
