New business Breathe Yoga at 104 E. Middle St. will open its doors on Saturday July 11, just before 11:30 a.m. for a free community event.

Sue Whitmarsh and Marie Brooks, co-founders and owners, have registered the studio as a host space for Deepak Chopra’s 2nd Annual Global Meditation for Compassion.

It is estimated that more than 500,000 people from nearly every country in the world will take part, coming together online with one common intention – to turn around the rising tide of disconnection in the world and, through renewed empathy and love, reconnect to what truly matters.

The new business owners extend an invitation to anyone who is interested in joining them to take part, stating, “We will gather at 11:30 a.m. for a short asana practice, before tuning in to a live broadcast at noon where Deepak Chopra will lead a one-hour conversation about compassion, featuring an exclusive 15-minute guided meditation and a musical performance.”

“Dhyana – or meditation – is an important part of our practice,” Whitmarsh said in a press release, adding, “and can be equally, if not more of a challenge for many people than asana (postures). But, it can help realize the goal of yoga, which, in his classic work the Yoga Sutras, Patanjali describes as “the progressive quieting of the fluctuations of the mind.” ”

As part of the event, participants will learn about the work of the Recovery Infused Yoga Community Center in Ann Arbor, and can donate to their work if they choose.

Brooks says, “We are so pleased to be working with this organization, and look forward to welcoming their Executive Director and Instructor, Lindsay Dolan. The Recovery-Infused Yoga Community Center is a non-profit dedicated to providing affordable yoga to people recovering from a wide variety of ailments and trauma.

“The purpose,” says Dolan, “of the center is to be open to anyone who wishes to heal.”

There is no need to register for this event.
