Family memories come to life as Chelsea Area Players (CAP) present Chitty Chitty Bang Bang live onstage July 17-19.

Audiences will take a fantastic musical adventure with an out-of-this-world car that flies through the air and sails the seas. Based on the beloved 1968 film version of Ian Fleming’s children’s book, and featuring an unforgettable score by the Sherman Brothers (Mary Poppins), Chitty Chitty Bang Bang is a family-friendly spectacular.

CAP is honored to be the first and only organization in Michigan to perform this classic full of surprises. The magical car “Chitty” is being designed and built by artistic director Brian Meyers and the Chelsea High School Robotics Club.

Eccentric inventor, Caractacus Potts sets about restoring an old race car from a scrap heap with the help of his children and adventurer father. They soon discover the car has magical properties. Trouble occurs when the evil Baron Bomburst desires the magic car for himself. Full of fun characters like the sweet Truly Scrumptious, bumbling Vulgarian spies, and the evil childcatcher, this show is a wonderful evening for the whole family.

Veteran Performer Leo Babcock shines as Caractacus. “It’s an honor to be creating a stage role that hasn’t been done by local groups before. Especially because I grew up watching the movie and the iconic portrayal of Caractacus by Dick Van Dyke,” he said in a press release.

Performances are Friday and Saturday July 17-18 at 7:30 p.m., and on Sunday, July 19 at 2:30 p.m. at the Chelsea High School Performing Arts Center, 740 N. Freer Road.

Tickets are $15 at the door or $12 in advance. Available at the Chelsea Pharmacy or online here.
