Kurt Koseck elected new chairman of the Chelsea Area Fire Authority Board

At the Jan. 24 Chelsea Area Fire Authority annual meeting, Kurt Koseck was elected by a majority vote as the new chairman of the CAFA Board.

Craig Maier was selected by as the vice chairman, Pete Feeney was chosen as the treasurer and Tom Osborne was elected secretary.

In addition, the board formed several committees including a millage renewal committee, a by law and an outsourcing review committee.

The board also approved meeting dates of the fourth Tuesday of the month in the Chelsea City Council chambers at 7 p.m. with the exception of the December meeting, which will take place on Dec. 19 at a location to be determined.

The board also plans to review the meeting time at its March meeting.

The new chief, Robert Arbini, is expected to be on board by Feb. 20. The board and the chief are working out the final details on a contract.

In addition, the board and the firefighter’s union are close to reaching a new 3-year contract. The agreement document is currently with the board’s attorney and then must go back to the board and the union membership with the minor changes.

The board unanimously approved Tom Demsky of Lyndon Township as an alternate at large member to the board.

Interim Fire Chief Jon Ichesco told the board that CAFA firefighters will be receiving replacement turnout gear this spring. Fourteen sets, including helmets, gloves, boots and hoods will be purchased through a grant. The cost to CAFA will be $3,567.20 or 10 percent of the total cost. Ichesco also hopes to replace fire hoses and additional training through grant funding and there will be more information available in March, he said.

Soon, you should be able to view the full meeting video, and you can view the fire authority web site here. The fire authority has a new website URL: chelseafire.org.

  1. Congratulations to Kurt on his election and best wishes for a successful term.

BTW, what was the actual vote tally?

    • The vote was 3-2. Kurt’s name was the first one nominated and Tom Osborne was the second nomination. The vote took place in nomination order and Feeney, Koseck and Mote voted for Koseck and Craig Maier and Tom Osborne voted for Osborne.
