At the Lima Township Board of Trustees meeting on Monday, Aug. 11, Supervisior Craig Maier told the board that the Jackson Road Bridge is expected to re-open on Monday, Aug. 18.

Maier said the contractor just needs to finish painting the structure.

Following an incident in the township last summer during which public safety was a concern, the Lima Township Board amended it zoning ordinance (section 5.46) to read: Transient and Amusement Enterprises and  added Temporary Gatherings.

According to the new language drafted by Carlisle/Wortman Associates, “The public health and welfare of the citizens of the township require the regulation of assemblies of large numbers of people.” So, the township is now requiring a permit for events that “promote, sell tickets to, or conduct an assembly.”

In other news, Township Treasurer Nanette Havens stated that 20 percent of the township tax bills have been collected to date.

The Chelsea Area Fire Authority (CAFA) Board meeting will take place next Tuesday morning, Aug. 19, at 9 a.m. in the council chambers at the police station.

On a final note, Township Supervisor Craig Maier expressed his and the board’s sincere condolences to the family of William “Bill” Woodward Van Riper (read obituary here), who passed away on Aug. 5.

“We lost a very dear friend, close neighbor, former Township Supervisor, and veteran,” Maier stated, and went on to say that there will be a memorial service this Thursday, Aug. 14, 11 a.m. at Faith Baptist Church, 4030 Kalmbach Road. The Van Riper family will receive friends from 10-11 a.m. and a luncheon will take place at the Chelsea Fairgrounds following the service.
