March 20: Chelsea Kiwanis to hear from Rick and Susie Catherman

(Chelsea Update would like to thank Bob Milbrodt for the information in this story.)

This Monday, the Chelsea Kiwanis Club will hear from Rick Catherman, director of bands in the Chelsea Schools and his wife, Susie Catherman, from the Band Boosters.

Kiwanis has supported the boosters in the fall when many bands are invited to Chelsea for the Marching Band Exposition. Club members look forward to hearing about plans for future concerts and travels the band will take.

Last Monday, the club heard from Jesse Kauffman, director of SRSLY Coalition.

He brought several middle and high school students with him who attended a national conference of coalitions working to eliminate youth drug and alcohol abuse.

The conference was held in Washington D.C. in February. Those representing SRSLY were chosen to give a presentation about the program in Chelsea. As the group is student-led, they each took part in the exposition before an essentially adult audience. Kauffman said Chelsea’s young people made a large impression on the other coalitions who will now try to copy SRSLY’s success.

The club meeting begins each Monday at 6:15 p.m. in the St. Joseph Mercy Chelsea Hospital cafeteria, and the speakers begin at about 6:45 p.m.

Everyone is invited to the club’s meetings to learn about Kiwanis.
