(Chelsea Update would like to thank Bob Milbrodt for the information in this story.)

On March 28, the Chelsea Kiwanis  will hear from Stephanie Willette, manager of the farmers markets in Chelsea. She will tell us about the many reasons to visit the markets.  Fresh local produce, meat, baked goods, flowers, prepared foods, and arts and crafts can be found there.

There is live music on Saturday, and both markets occasionally feature cooking demonstrations, area non-profits, basket giveaways, and fun activities.

Food assistance programs are offered, including SNAP, Double Up Food Bucks, Prescription for Health, WIC, and Senior Project Fresh.  Many of the vendors have weekly boxes of vegetables through their CSA programs.

New this year, the Saturday market will be open an extra hour from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. The Wednesday market is open from 2-6 p.m.  Both markets are located at the Palmer Lot on Main Street.

The markets will be hosting a farm to table fundraiser dinner on Monday, May 9, from 5-8 p.m. at the Chelsea Alehouse.  You can enjoy food from the vendors, meet the farmers, and enjoy live music.

Registration and info will be coming soon to the website, www.chelseafarmersmkt.org

Last Monday, club members heard from Chelsea Schools Superintendent David Killips, who gave us a thorough presentation on the two proposals that will be on the May ballot.

The first is a renewal of the sinking fund which used for major capital projects like the parking lot at North Creek Elementary. The second is a tax increase for the benefit of special education in the Washtenaw Intermediate School District, of which Chelsea Schools will receive a share.

The club meeting begins each Monday at 6:15 p.m. in the St. Joseph Mercy-Chelsea Hospital cafeteria, and the speakers begin at about 6:45 p.m.

Everyone is invited to the club’s meetings to learn about Kiwanis and click www.kiwanisclubofchelsea.org for more information.
