Oct. 19-25: Chelsea District Library to celebrate Friends of the Library

CDL logo-1The Chelsea District Library will spend the week of Oct. 19-25, celebrating its Friends of the Library volunteer organization, and encouraging community residents to give the gift of their support for the library by becoming a member.

The Friends of the Chelsea District Library have been in existence since 1949, and in that time have raised over $100,000 for the library and its programs. Many friends also donate their time and energies serving on the organization’s board, attending community events and assisting in the planning of many fundraising efforts, including their popular monthly used book sales where customers can fill a grocery-sized bag for just $5.

Remaining 2014 book sales will be held in the library basement on Saturday, Nov. 8, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

“The library has always played such an important role in mine and my family’s life,” said Friends president Marie Brooks. “I truly enjoy being able to give something back – and being an active member of this group is both fun and rewarding.”

Other friends officers are Cynthia Silveri (Past President), Nancy Neff (Treasurer), Diane Bloom (Secretary), Michele Mullens (Hospitality), and Susan Whitmarsh (President Elect/Communications).

“Our library would be much poorer without the Friends,” said Library Director Bill Harmer. “The funds they raise definitely enable us to offer the quality programming that our community has come to expect from us, and I think many patrons would be surprised to learn just how many of the services and programs they enjoy are supported by the Friends.”

Anyone interested in finding out more about the friends, or wishing to join, can stop by the friends’ table in the Chelsea District Library lobby on Monday, Oct. 20, Tuesday, Oct. 21 and Saturday, Oct. 25 between 10 a.m.-noon or on Thursday, Oct. 23 from 6-8 p.m.

Any new or renewing members who sign up during this week will automatically be entered into a drawing to win a Kindle Paperwhite e-reader.

In addition, those visiting the friends’ table on Oct. 20 will be offered a complimentary chair massage, courtesy of Chelsea Wellness Center, which is celebrating Massage Therapy Awareness Week.

The Friends have a variety of membership levels to choose from including $10 Student or Senior, $25 Friend and Family, $50 Best Friend, $100 Supporting, $250 Corporate or Business sponsor, $500 Patron, $1,000 Sustaining Member.
