The Sylvan Township Board of Trustees met in front of an audience of almost two dozen on Tuesday, Feb. 3.

Township Supervisor Scott Cooper announced that Patrick Zieske is the Sylvan Township Citizen of the Year. Zieske runs the Free Sylvan website. Cooper said, “Free Sylvan has really been a wonderful service to the community over the last three years.”

Trustee Kurt Kosek announced that the Chelsea Area Fire Authority (CAFA) has a draft copy of a union contract in hand, and that the contract is currently being reviewed by attorneys, as well as YourSource Management Group, the human resources firm recently hired by CAFA.

Kosek also said CAFA was working on an emergency plan for any emergencies that might take place at Chelsea Milling Company. He said he’d like to see CAFA have a plan in place and conduct drills, so “They (CAFA) should become very familiar with Chelsea Milling, and where the dangerous parts of that might be, and where the challenging parts are.”

Kosek offered examples such as “If something happens there, who’s calling Amtrak? How do we get the county involved? All that should be thought out ahead of time.”

In other news, David Seitz was unanimously reappointed to the Planning Commission for a 3-year term.

Treasurer Rod Branham reminded residents that Feb. 17 is the last day to pay winter taxes without a penalty. March 2 is the deadline to pay with a penalty. After March 2, taxes go to Washtenaw County for collection.

Township Clerk Kathy Kennedy reminded residents that April 6 is the last day to register to vote in the upcoming May 5 election.

  1. Hi Lisa,
Thanks for the great article about Patrick receiving the Citizen of the Year Award. He is certainly deserving.
I noticed at the end of the article I was quoted as saying March 3 is the last day to register for the May election, but it is actually April 6. I may have misspoke at the meeting. Could you please print a correction?
    Thanks so much!
    Kathy Kennedy
    Sylvan Township Clerk
