Publisher’s Message: Chelsea Update has exciting news

As if celebrating Chelsea Update’s third birthday on July 23 wasn’t exciting enough, something else super cool took place that day.

The Chelsea Area Chamber of Commerce announced that Chelsea Update was chosen by the Board of Directors as a new partner and co-sponsor for the Citizen of the Year and Lifetime Achievement Award programs.

“Chelsea Update, owned by Lisa Allmendinger, earned the Small Business Leadership Award 2014 for exemplary commitment to our wonderful community. Her news site has become a valuable resource for the area residents, service groups, and businesses,” the announcement said.

“I am honored to have Chelsea Update joins us as a steward of this important community award,” said Bob Pierce, executive director of the Chelsea Area Chamber of Commerce.

For anyone who has lived in this community for any length of time knows, these two awards recognize the best of what the Chelsea community has to offer – it’s amazing and caring people.

I can’t wait to tell you all about this year’s winners once they are chosen and cover the awards ceremony and dinner in words and photos. Lots of photos.

I’d also like to send a special shout out to everyone who bid on Chelsea Update’s silent auction during the birthday celebration at the Chelsea Bakery. The day before the party, I decided to donate four of my lovingly stitched and framed large cross-stitch pieces – literally taking them off my walls. And, Alan Scafuri and A.K. Tobias donated a beautiful Baltic amber necklace to the site’s fundraising cause as well.

Rick Taylor was the high bidder for the amber necklace.
Gary and Janet Adams won “The Moose at Sunset.”
Mayor Jason Lindauer won “Otter in the Surf.”
Bob Milbrodt won “A Positive Attitude.”
Elizabeth Richardson won “Tranquility Cranes.”
Kim Yam won “Happiness Pandas.”

About 100 people dropped by the party and lots of cake was consumed by all. Thank you everyone for taking the time to stop by and celebrate Chelsea Update’s birthday. Thank you for all the kind words and your generous donations at the party and throughout the Sounds and Sights Festival weekend at our table.

And, if you planned to make a donation to Chelsea Update but haven’t gotten around to it, checks can be made out to Chelsea Update and mailed to 18829 Bush Road, Chelsea, MI 48118. Your donations help with ongoing operations and I hope to cobble together enough money to hire a high school sports writer this year.
