Recent obituaries: Randall “Randy” G. Fox, John Murray Lantis, Herbert Jerome Smith, Jr.

Fox_Randy_cropped2Randall “Randy” G. Fox of Chelsea, age 63, died unexpectedly Saturday, April 11, 2015 at his home. He was born Aug. 23, 1951 in Big Rapids, Michigan, the son of Clayton Graham and Isabelle A. (Newell) Fox.

Randy graduated from Fremont High School in 1969. He attended Ferris State University, until he was drafted into the U.S. Army. Randy served as an MP in Vietnam. He graduated from ITT with a degree in Computer Programing. Randy worked as a supervisor in Automation Services at U of M for the last 20 years. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, where he and Lynn were head ushers for many years. Randy was a member of Inverness Country Club, and also active in the Dexter Knights of Columbus and worked for Habitat for Humanity and National Relief Network trips for disaster relief. He coached soccer, T-Ball, and Little League in Chelsea. Randy participated in Boy Scouts with his son, including a trip to Philmont. He enjoyed hunting and his annual fishing trips to Canada with friends and family. Randy ran many marathons and recently earned his Scuba Diving License.

LantisJohnJohn Murray Lantis of Chelsea, formerly of Napoleon, age 77, died Sunday, April 12, 2015 at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital – Chelsea, after a long illness.

He was born Oct. 13, 1937 in Chelsea, Michigan, the son of Robert R. and Agnes Emeline (Pitts) Lantis.

John graduated from Napoleon High School in 1955. He operated the family grocery business, AandB IGA in Napoleon, and later worked at the IGA in Brooklyn.  John enjoyed going to the Napoleon Cafe with his friends.  He loved to play and watch basketball.

Smith,-Herbert-webHerbert Jerome Smith Jr. of Grass Lake, age 78, passed away at his home on Sunday, April 12, 2015, surrounded by his family and loved ones.

He was born on July 25, 1936, in Wyandotte, MI, the son of Herbert J. Sr. and Fannie Mae (Hill) Smith.  On July 4, 1987, he married Judith Kay Sturm in South Lyon; she survives.

Herb lived in the area for the past 30 years, coming from Ann Arbor.  He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving during the Korean War, was a member of the American Legion Herbert J. McKune Post 31 in Chelsea, and had worked as an electrician for 25 years at Ford Motor Co. for UAW Local 852, retiring in 2001. Herb loved the outdoors.

In addition to his wife, surviving are their children: Jeff (Annette) Smith of Mt. Pleasant, Jason (Stacey) Smith of Brighton, Jeremy (Samantha) Smith of Ypsilanti, Jennifer (Brendan) Smith of Whitmore Lake, Josh (Erin) Smith of Clinton Twp., Thomas (Denise) Nowatzke of Ann Arbor, Jennifer (Darryl) Spicher of Grosse Pointe Woods, and Jill Nowatzke (Matthew Katon) of Unadilla Twp.; his grandchildren: Dalton Spero, Eric Spero, Vincent Nowatzke, Matilda Seagraves, Brock Spicher, Gianna Nowatzke, Brynn Spicher, Delaney Bachman, Charlotte Bachman, Ava Nowatzke, Elinor Bachman, and Chloe Smith; and extended family member, Linton Prieskorn of Ann Arbor.  He was preceded in death by his parents.
