Recent obituary: Al Townsend

Townsend,-Beryl-Allan-webBeryl Allan “Al” Townsend of of Dexter Township, age 88, passed away on Thursday, July 24, 2014, in Ann Arbor.

He was born on March 13, 1926, in Hart, MI, the son of Floyd E. and Ila (Andrus) Townsend. Al was a veteran of the United States Army, serving during World War II.  On Oct. 6, 1951, he married Amelia Mildred “Millie” Toma in Ann Arbor, and she preceded him in death on Jan. 1, 2009.

Al had worked for the Ypsilanti School District as an administrator, principal, and teacher.  He had a cottage at North Lake since 1961 and was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Stockbridge.  He was a talented musician, being Gene Krupa’s first trombonist in the 1940s and later playing in a 21-piece band, the Ambassadors, and also in the Couriers, a 9-piece band.  He had served as President of both the Ann Arbor Flyers Club and the Ann Arbor Federation of Musicians.
