Recent obituary: Frederick Arthur Mills

Mills,-Frederick-webFrederick Arthur Mills of Chelsea, age 74, passed away on Sunday, Sept. 7, 2014, at his home.

He was born the son of Niel and Alta Marie (Dewey) Mills on Dec. 25, 1939, in Stockbridge, MI. Fred graduated from Stockbridge High School where he participated in football, basketball, baseball, and track.  He received a Bachelor’s Degree from Eastern Michigan University in 1962 and a Master’s Degree from the University of Michigan in 1963, after which he moved to Chelsea.

He became a teacher and coach at Chelsea High School and was named Outstanding Young Educator of 1966 by the Chelsea Jaycees.  He then became Assistant Superintendent of the Chelsea School District until 1995 when he started at Chelsea Lumber Company in Contractor Sales.

He was involved in many areas of the Chelsea community including being a charter member of the Chelsea Lions Club, board chairman of the Chelsea Community Hospital Board of Trustees, was on the Chelsea State Bank Board of Directors, and was instrumental in the industrial and economic development of Chelsea, receiving the 2007 Lifetime Achievement Award – City of Chelsea.

Fred was a member of the Chelsea First United Methodist Church and was Construction Supervisor for the building addition.  He was an avid fan of all athletic and school events.  He loved his family, community, and his work, as well as travel to the family cottage in the U.P.
